The Farmers Market Café has been serving home cooked meals to its customers since
the early eighties, by the owner and his wife Phil and Jo Ann Norton, and the popular name just comes from the location being in the old farmer’s market area of Montgomery. I have grown up eating and working at this establishment since
Phil and Jo Ann are my mother’s parents, but with that aside there are many excellent reasons to dine here and enjoy the history of this Montgomery landmark. When you walk in the door, you are immediately greeted by Phil and Jo Ann and one of many very outgoing waitresses like Val“my favorite”. You can’t help but feel at home when you walk in the door here no matter who you are or where you’re from. People travelling from all over stop to dine here since it is on Montgomery’s "must do" list and also with it being conveniently located downtown, close to the interstate and Old Alabama Town. Most of the customers seen while eating here are local politicians and government workers, catching a quick bite for breakfast or lunch before heading back to their busy offices. Others seen here are just the local regulars that have retired and have been
coming in for breakfast and lunch for many years just as a social gathering, and to keep up with everything going on around the city of Montgomery. The building is also known to have been next door neighbors to where the famous Hank Williams
Sr. and his mother grew up. This building has seen a lot happen around Montgomery and it shows, but it does not reflect on the quality of the food. The produce served here is all local and delivered daily and the cooks preparing the food "C.B. Grant and his wife Betty Jean" have been working here for 30 years and start their mornings at 4.00 A.M. so the meals are just as fresh and tasty as they were the day before. This is without a doubt a unique experience and well worth the drive downtown to enjoy some good home cooked cafeteria style food, and go home to take a nap.
